Starving For Attention measure 8"x10". It was done with watercolor and using the dry brush technique. I love the way the dry brush technique looks in a painting. I am able to create more subtle value shifts and more dramatic texture. Andrew Wyeth was an artist that used the dry brush technique in many of his pieces.
This piece is referenced from a photo I took while in Mexico. I saw many stray dogs while visiting in Mexico. These dogs would linger near the humans looking for opportunities to insert themselves in the human world. While watching a street basketball game I saw a dog slowly move toward a group of humans also watching the game. The dog would lie down on a bleacher riser for awhile and then rise and go up a bleacher riser or two towards the human group. He would lie settle back down again as if sleeping and then repeat the same pattern until he got as near as he thought the humans would allow and settled for this proximity to the humans. I had another dog bark at me when I approached a home that had a stout wall surrounding it. The dog did not belong to this house, but he guarded it as if it was his. Of course I may be personifying the actions of these dogs because at the time I was feeling alone and discarded after a divorce and I myself was trying to find a loving human world to belong to.
